Message from the President

Dr Sana Masmoudi, President of STPO

Welcome to the website of the Tunisian Society of Psycho-Oncology. Founded in 2017, STPO was born of a desire to promote a comprehensive, humane, and multidisciplinary approach to cancer — one that integrates the psychological, emotional, social, and relational dimensions alongside medical treatment.

Cancer does not affect the body alone: it unsettles emotions, relationships, and family, professional, and social life. Psycho-oncology attends to the whole person and accompanies them at every stage of their journey, from the announcement of the diagnosis to life after cancer. Since its creation, STPO has worked to develop it in Tunisia through the training of health professionals, research, public awareness, and stronger multidisciplinary collaboration.

Our conviction is that the quality of care also depends on the quality of bonds: between patients and caregivers, between loved ones and the ill, among the disciplines, and between science and human experience. Through this website, we hope to offer a space for information, sharing, and reflection in the service of more humane, more integrated cancer care, centered on the needs of patients. On behalf of the entire STPO team, I welcome you.

The discipline

What is psycho-oncology?

Psycho-oncology is a specialized discipline concerned with the psychological, emotional, social, and relational dimensions of cancer.

It accompanies patients, their loved ones, and caregivers at every stage of the care pathway, from the announcement of the diagnosis to life after cancer.

Psycho-oncology contributes to the screening and management of psychological distress, to support for loved ones, to improving quality of life, and to strengthening communication among everyone involved in care.

Today, psychosocial care is recognized as an essential component of comprehensive, quality cancer care. Psycho-oncology fully embodies this approach by placing the person, their experience, and their needs at the heart of care.
